Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 Vaccine Emergency Use Authorization; Updated New York State Guidance

The Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency use authorization over the weekend for the single-dose COVID-19 vaccine developed by the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson for individuals 18 years of age and older. Additionally, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the New York State Clinical Advisory Task Force unanimously recommended use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. New York State updated its weekly planning request process in the New York State Immunization Information System to include the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. New York City is currently updating its planning request process for the Citywide Immunization Registry to include the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Initial supply of Johnson & Johnson vaccine is very limited. At this time, only hospitals are considered for receipt of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine this week for vaccinating only the following populations:


New York State issued updated guidance effective March 1, that adds public-facing hotel workers as eligible for COVID-19 vaccination. This group may register for COVID-19 vaccination appointments at State mass vaccination sites and may be eligible for vaccination at local health departments, if the county opts to vaccinate the population.
